A feat of technical mastery, The Royal Oak Perpetual Calendar Openworked dresses the artistic openworked sapphire dial and the movement’s visible pink gold components in black ceramics

The new perpetual calendar openworked selfwinding wristwatch now joining the Royal Oak collection is a masterful demonstration of contrasts and play of light, featuring all the Manufacture’s horological and decorative skills.

The complexity and transparency of the openworked sapphire dial is framed by the simple opacity of a black ceramic case and bracelet. Pink gold accents on the mechanism, hands and displays contrast with the steel of the inner workings. Numbers, days and months on the dial contrast with the poetry of a realistic moon phase floating across a star-lit sky of deep blue aventurine, a material that also features in the CODE 11.59 by Audemars Piguet collection, launched this year.

The play of light is achieved by a masterclass of hand-finishing and decorative techniques on display throughout the model, most notably in the black yttrium oxide ceramic which serves as a canvas for Audemars Piguet’s hand-finishers. Grinding and polishing this

harder-than-steel material, they have crafted enduringly clean edges and light-refracting surfaces.

Head of Complications, Michael Friedman salutes the teamwork behind the new mechanism, “This development has been a collaborative effort between many skilled craftspeople and watchmakers in our facilities in Le Brassus, Le Locle and Meyrin to create our first perpetual calendar openworked for quite some time.”

Exclusively available in Audemars Piguet boutiques, the new model incorporates Manufacture and calibre 5135 with a case size of 41mm, case thickness of 9.9mm and water resistance to 20m. The black ceramic case has a glareproof sapphire crystal and titanium caseback with screw-locked crown. The sapphire dial features a smoked external counter zone, pink gold hour-markers and Royal Oak hands with luminescent coating. The black inner bezel echoes the black ceramic case and bracelet, which comes with a titanium AP folding clasp.
